Currumbin, in short

Currumbin is about 23 kilometres south-south-east of Surfers Paradise, running from Currumbin Creek down to Wyberba Street, with Palm Beach across the creek and Tugun to the south. The Gold Coast Highway doesn't run straight through. It climbs over the headland through Currumbin Hill Conservation Park and passes the Wildlife Sanctuary, with the M1 on the suburb's western edge. It started as a small holiday and fishing spot near the old railway station, and it's still mostly low-rise.

Old beach houses and beachfront flats

Many Currumbin homes date from subdivisions in the 1920s, and the suburb still has a good number of fibro beach houses. Those are the jobs that come up most: fibro and asbestos removal, then the house, sheds and any granny flat cleared for a new home. On the beachfront, older holiday flats and beach shacks are giving way to low-rise apartments, and those jobs need more planning around neighbours and services.

The hill and the creek

Currumbin has two very different kinds of block. Up the slope west of the highway, the house lots are steep, so machine access, retaining and where the rubble goes are planned before work starts. Down by Currumbin Creek the land is low, the creek has flooded in heavy rain, and council dredges its mouth every year. Either way, footings and slabs come out and the ground is backfilled and compacted for the new build.

Council, height limits and getting in

Currumbin is in the City of Gold Coast.
